From Uncertainty to Resilience: Odette’s Story

Odette, a 37-year-old mother of three from Rwanda, is a proud member of a savings group in her community — and joining it has changed the course of her life.

When Odette first became part of the group, she took out a modest loan to support her small tailoring business. At the time, her work was limited, and her income uncertain. But with determination — and the encouragement and accountability of her savings group — she expanded her business. Today, she not only sews clothing for a wide range of customers, she also sells tailoring materials and trains new learners in the craft. Her household income has risen steadily, along with her personal savings.

This progress came during a deeply difficult season in Odette’s life. After she and her husband divorced, she was left with overwhelming fears about how she would care for her children. The future felt uncertain, and she worried she would not be able to meet even their most basic needs. Through the steady support of her savings group, Odette found her footing again. She is now able to provide food for her family and pay her children’s school fees, something she once feared would be impossible.

For Odette, the impact of the savings group goes beyond financial stability. Within the group, she has found strong friendships, encouragement, and emotional support. What began as a way to save and access credit has become a source of community and hope — one that continues to sustain her as she builds a more secure future for herself and her children.
